Pregnancy Tests and hCG sensitivity

The pregnancy tests on the market today range widely in their sensitivity in picking up the pregnancy hormone, hCG. We currently offer two types of Pregnancy Test. Our standard test has a sensitivity of 25 mIU. We also offer a more sensitive test that detects just 10 miu/ml of hCG present in urine (note that the lower the number, the higher the sensitivity of a test).

Is the Extra Sensitive Pregnancy Test the Best to Use?

For most women, we would say YES! The extra-sensitive test lets you know sooner if you are pregnant, allowing you to arrange medical care as soon as possible.

However, there is a downside to using such early tests. A quarter of all pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage and many of these being very early pregnancies. If you use one of these pregnancy tests before your period is due, you could detect an early pregnancy but end up going on to have your period anyway due to a very early miscarriage. Many couples will find it difficult to deal with this sort of emotional rollercoaster.

How Soon Can Pregnancy Tests Detect Pregnancy?

The earliest a pregnancy test can detect pregnancy is about 7-10 days after conception. However, the most accurate results come after a missed period.

For example, if your period is due on the 15th of the month and you conceive on the 10th, a sensitive early test may be able to detect the pregnancy hormone hCG in your urine around the 20th. A test taken before your expected period could give a false negative result.

Tips for Taking an Early Pregnancy Test

If you decide to take an early pregnancy test, keep these tips in mind:

• Use your first morning urine, which has the highest concentration of hCG
• Don’t drink excessive fluids before testing, which can dilute your urine
• Read the instructions thoroughly and follow them exactly
• Wait until the recommended time to read the results
• If the result is negative but your period still doesn’t arrive, test again in a few days

With ultra-sensitive tests like the 10mIU/ml option from Zoom Baby, you have a better chance of detecting pregnancy early. However, getting a definitive result may require patience. Stay hopeful but realistic, and test again if needed. Your body will give you the answer when the time is right.
